[MEMORY #1] DDD Part 2: Release day at Black Crown
Summary: Everyone’s in line for the release of the hot new game: DDD! No one actually knows what DDD is going to be yet, but boy, people are excited. Yugi, Anzu, and Bakura are already in line outside of the Black Crown Game Shop and have been for a while, but Jounouchi is late — when he finally shows up, Anzu tells him to go to the back of the line and there’s some banter.
Yugi says to keep the fact that they’re all here a secret from his grandpa since Black Crown is a rival store and his grandpa’s old-fashioned, so of course his grandpa is actually standing right behind him; hilarity ensues.
It’s absolute chaos as a sea of nerds swarms into the store once it’s open and everyone gets separated. They all make it back out (except for Yugi) with their purchases and discover that DDD is a dice game of some sort, with each dice having a unique pattern of different symbols on each side.
Yugi… continues to not come out of the store. Eventually, everyone gets worried and goes back in to check on him, only to discover that he’s not in the store anymore. Asking one of the security guards is fruitless, since he just suggests that Yugi probably gave up on getting the game because of the crowd and went home. Jounouchi says there’s now way Yugi would give up when it comes to games. Yugi’s grandpa suggests that they wait for Yugi at home — he’s a high schooler, not a lost child.
Everyone agrees to do so, but Jounouchi’s still bothered because it’s just not like Yugi to disappear without telling them. As the others leave, Bakura hesitates, looking back at the Black Crown building and thinking, “... I’ve got a bad feeling about this... Yugi-kun..”
Takeaways:
- ... it's actually a surprisingly normal scenario? No crazy card games or Egyptian gods.
- He's definitely wearing a necklace identical to the one Nine had on in his memory, though.
- Gaming nerd confirmed.
- Friends!!1!
[MEMORY #2] Staying up way too late working on a campaign
He seems completely absorbed in his work, which is unfortunate, because he's oblivious to the fact that it's already 2 AM and he doesn't show signs of stopping any time soon.
Takeaways:
- Monster World? Monster World!
- This is several years ago, but he's still wearing the Ring.
- In addition to being excited over the game, there's a sense he's really excited to be playing with people.
[MEMORY #3] Duelist Kingdom: Food & the Ring
Summary: Thanks to Mai, Ryou is able to make dinner for everyone as they camp out on the first night of Duelist Kingdom. Afterwards, he, Honda, and Jounouchi go to bed... on the forest floor... because they didn't bring a tent or sleeping bags, either. They're quickly woken up by a lot of shouting and special effects and find that some asshole has stolen Mai's Star Chips and Atem has penalty gamed him in response. There's some inspirational words from Jounouchi to inspire Mai to keep fighting, and then everyone FINALLY gets ready to sleep. Again.
At which point Honda wakes them up screaming because he mistakes a vine for a snake. Sigh. Third time's the charm. Except not, because then Ryou yells -- he's startled because the Millennium Ring is pointing at Pegasus' castle. He talks a little about his interest in the Millennium Items, and Yugi reminds him again not to actually wear the Ring.
Finally, they're all woken up AGAIN by the sound of a helicopter landing nearby... and out steps Kaiba.
Takeaways:
- Card game... tournament... on an island??? Sure, why not.
- He and his friends are clearly incredibly smart because they forgot to bring food on a camping trip. Whoops!! But he does know how to cook!
- He's less interested in the card game stuff than he is the Millennium Items.
- "Okay... but remember, whatever you do, don't put on the Millennium Ring! It's too dangerous!" "Don't worry! I won't!" Ah. Hm. Well. About that.
- Why is Intensity like this.
[Memory #4] Battle City: Rescued(?)
Summary:
- tl;dr Malik "rescues" an injured Ryou who has no memory of what happened to him
- obviously anyone else viewing the memory will only see the parts Ryou was fully conscious for, so they will unfortunately miss out on Malik's totally necessary villainous posing
Takeaways: This memory is... odd.
It's dark. There's a vague feeling of discomfort and the knowledge that things are happening in your periphery, but everything seems so distant and unimportant. You can't focus even if you wanted to. It's just a list of impressions: voices (one of them familiar, one not), the hum of an engine, your body being moved and manipulated. Hands in your hair.
And then suddenly, from that comfortable nothingness, everything snaps more or less into focus (though a weird vagueness remains). You're lying on the ground and there's a sharp, throbbing pain in your arm. You have absolutely no idea how you got here. The last thing you remember is... you're not sure, actually. Jounouchi won a duel, and then...? Someone's helping you up, asking if you're okay (have you heard his voice before? have you?) and you finally open your eyes. No, you've never seen this boy before, because you're sure you'd remember a foreigner as striking as him.
Jounouchi and Anzu are there, too. They ask the unknown boy holding you up what happened, but he doesn't know either. You try to push through the pain and your own fragmented memories, and there's talk of taking you to the hospital, but before that can happen—
You stole someone's Duel Disk? That's right, that's the odd weight on your arm. But you don't remember doing that. There's a sinking feeling in your stomach. The missing memories, people accusing you of things you wouldn't do — that's familiar. It had to have been—
But before you can complete the thought, the two men are attacking, and the boy takes the hit for you. Yugi's grandpa offers to take you to the hospital.
The sense of something being off doesn't go away.
